What A Lucky . . . Legacy!
By

May memories never end
Of one “Lucky” canine friend.
In a country called Surry.
A new legend comes to be
Of one Lucky Little Plott--
Carolina loves a lot.
He was hunting, we suppose,
Sniffing game with his knee nose
On one January night
With a shining moon so bright.
Was it bobcat, bear, or coon?
Tragedy can strike so soon!
Did he get into some fights?
Was he blinded by head lights?
Did a car hit him that day?
Oh! So many die this way.
Where did this dog’s master go?
We won’t really ever know.
How long in the weeds he lies,
We can guess. But realize
If he lives this will depend
On the help of a new friend.
Libby glanced and saw his head,
When she drove by his weed bed.
She’d get Rick to help him out.
This hound’s “Lucky” there’s no doubt.
Finally her husband Rick,
Comes to help this dog so sick.
Quickly some more hands are found
To pick up the injured hound.
Rick worries about the hound.
Will his rescued dog rebound?
Broken bones, his lungs are bad,
Oh! The news sounds so, so sad!
His hound finds many more friends.
Gradually, he starts to mend
People seem to care a lot
For this state dog called a Plott.
Soon the longed for day arrives.
Lucky watches as Rick drives.
Could this be the home Rick owns?
What a place to hide a bone!
He meets Libby, Rick’s sweet wife.
She’s loved canines all her life.
For new friends he doesn’t lack.
He completes their dog six pack.
Libby teaches with great heart.
An adventure they will start.
She researched the breed, Plott hound.
Soon the two are Tar Heel bound.
They have traveled far and wide
Many counties side by side.
They taught Plott hound history
Full of facts and mystery.
At a country club, as guest,
This canine shows off his best.
At a book club where they go,
This Plott truly steals the show.
A calendar and some books
Have portrayed their Lucky’s looks.
Their dog’s now a famous hound.
He’s been plotting all around.
What a twelve-year legacy,
“Lucky” journey for these three.
Many made this “Lucky” Plott--
Carolina’s own mascot.
Their Plott’s tracking out new land
Howling with an angel band.
This dog’s battle scars are healed.
Yet, his time on earth is sealed.
May the purpose of this Plott
Teach us all to love a lot.
